AR Guide to CNC machine operation for the Machine Technician programme

AR technologies combine the virtual and physical worlds, presenting an innovative approach to richer and more interactive learning experiences. In the Computer Assisted Technologies class, we decided to create a scenario representing the start-up of a CNC machine. This skill is fundamental and every student in the group must master it as a prerequisite for further work. Until now, this skill has been taught individually, as it requires hands-on experience on the machine itself. However, the students have now acquired this skill through an AR guide, which has enabled them to follow step-by-step instructions in real time and in a real environment.

After creating a learning scenario to start the CNC machine, the first step was to select a tool to demonstrate the augmented reality. Among the available AR tools, we chose JigSpace as it is easy to use and we were able to try it for free. Finally, we created three AR guides: to start the machine, to show the machine structure and to show the machine zero point calibration process.
